Iowa grocers award grant to GJ Community Center

Diane Wise and the fundraising committee for the new Grand Junction Community Center have been credited for leaving no stones unturned in their search for funding for the $1.1 million project. Wise has also turned over plastic grocery bags. The Iowa Grocery Industry Association (IGIA) announced today, Earth Day, that the Grand Junction Community Center is one of 22 projects to receive grant funds through its Build With Bags ™ grant program.

Wise said the $1,691 grant will purchase benches and trash bins made of recycled grocery bags for the Community Center.

According to the IGIA website, the Build with Bags program is the grocers’ effort to affect real change in reducing consumption of plastic bags and increasing recycling of the bags. By using grant awards to purchase products made of recycled plastic bags, the association is increasing awareness of recycling and growing the market for products made of the material. Playground equipment, tables, benches and trash receptacles are among the products available.

Wise thanked Doug Monaghan, manager of the Jefferson Fareway store, for his support of the grant.
